About the Role – Chief Medical Officer Jobs in Mazabuka Reporting directly to the Estate Support Services Director, the Chief Medical Officer will provide strategic leadership, clinical oversight, and operational management across Zambia Sugar’s estate hospital and three clinics.
Serving approximately 16,000 employees and their families, the role is pivotal in delivering integrated, high-quality medical and occupational health services that promote employee wellbeing and support the company’s public health legacy.
The successful candidate will collaborate with diverse cross-functional teams to develop health frameworks, policies, and assurance mechanisms. They will ensure the delivery of safe, efficient, and fit-for-purpose healthcare aligned with regulatory standards and company policies.
Key Responsibilities Provide strategic medical and occupational health advice to executive leadership and the broader business. Lead the implementation of Medical Services strategy, policies, procedures, and minimum standards.
Develop and maintain integrated health and occupational health frameworks to protect employee health and fitness for work. Manage a risk-based occupational health programme, including medical surveillance and health promotion.
Partner with HR, Safety, and Operations to deliver employee health and wellbeing initiatives. Enhance medical services capability through staff development, coaching, and adoption of appropriate technology and equipment.
Ensure clinical governance and oversight of medical facilities, promoting safe and high-quality patient care. Provide expert leadership in managing significant health risks, disease outbreaks, and public health programmes such as malaria, HIV/TB, and immunisation.
Develop strategic partnerships with government bodies, healthcare providers, and NGOs to improve health outcomes. Oversee compliance with healthcare legislation, professional standards, and company policies.
Advise on employee medical benefits to ensure effectiveness and sustainability. Lead multidisciplinary medical teams fostering accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance.
Manage budgets, pharmacy operations, healthcare infrastructure, and capital investments. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Medicine (MBChB or MD) with current registration and a valid practising certificate from the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
Preferably 10 years’ experience in clinical, hospital, or healthcare management. Strong expertise in occupational health; a postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health is advantageous.
Proven leadership experience in managing multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Comprehensive knowledge of clinical governance, healthcare operations, health risk management, regulatory compliance, and financial oversight.
Ability to influence and provide expert advice to senior and executive leadership across diverse teams. Excellent stakeholder management skills with experience liaising with government, healthcare providers, and external partners.
Experience in driving organizational change, capability development, and continuous improvement in healthcare services is a plus. Applicants must provide qualifications verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
