The Account Assistant supports the day-to-day accounting operations of the company, maintaining accurate financial records and assisting with transaction processing, reconciliations, reporting, and statutory compliance. Working under the guidance of the Senior Accountant, the role is a strong entry point for a numerate, dependable finance professional looking to build a career in a fast-growing agriculture and energy business.
● Record daily financial transactions and post accurate journal entries to the general ledger.
● Process accounts payable and accounts receivable, including supplier invoices, customer invoices, and payments.
● Perform bank reconciliations and reconcile supplier and customer statements on a regular basis.
● Assist with inventory accounting for agricultural feedstock and finished fuel products, including stock counts, valuations, and variance investigation.
● Support production cost tracking and help monitor cost of goods sold across the production cycle.
● Assist with the preparation and filing of statutory returns such as VAT, PAYE, and withholding tax.
● Support the computation and submission of excise duty and fuel levy obligations.
● Maintain the fixed asset register and process depreciation entries.
● Manage petty cash and ensure supporting documentation is complete and accurate.
● Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures.
● Help prepare management accounts, schedules, and routine financial reports.
● Support the annual audit by preparing schedules and providing requested documentation.
● Maintain organised, accurate financial records and filing systems.
● Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and general finance administration as required.
● Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; or a part-qualified professional (ACCA, CIMA, CA, ZICA).
● Minimum of 1 year of practical experience in an accounting or finance role.
● Working knowledge of accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks, Sage, Pastel, or SAP).
● Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
● Good understanding of accounting principles and IFRS.
● Familiarity with local tax and statutory requirements.
● High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
● Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.
● Good written and verbal communication skills.
● Experience in manufacturing, agriculture, energy, or the fuel/commodities sector.
● Exposure to inventory and cost accounting.
● Progress toward a professional accounting qualification.
● Experience supporting external audits.
